the integration of intelligence data systems
the adoption of mobile computing
the use of surveillance technologies
the application of digital biometrics the crosscutting issue of user acceptance
the emerging challenge of social media applications.
The report highlights the many commonalities, but also the existing differences with respect to how the trends materialise in the ten countries. One important result for all countries is that only few ICT developments involve multiple police forces from different countries. Most initiatives remain bound to local and national contexts and there is only limited awareness about “what is going on” in other countries. COMPOSITE’s envisaged online Police Monitor, an online database on change processes in European police forces, will capture ICT trends and allow police to develop a better oversight.
The report also provides the groundwork for the next stage of our research in the Work Package “Technology Adaptation”. Here, the aim is to identify best practices with regards to the usage of ICT in policing. We will start this stage by organising a workshop on social media applications and their relation to police work. Details on the workshop will be published soon.
For any further questions or interests in that workshop, please contact Sebastian Denef at sebastian.denef@fit.fraunhofer.de.
